THEY FORCED HER TO MARRY A POOR MAN BECAUSE SHE WAS ADOPTED... Part 3
He looked so unkempt—his clothes shabby, his hair long and tangled. Ruth couldn’t help but wonder what a man like him was doing in their home."Sit," Mr. Ezeh commanded, his voice firm.Ruth, confused but obedient, sat down on the opposite side of the room, offering a polite greeting. The man smiled warmly at her, his smile soft and friendly, but it did little to ease the strange tension in the air.
"Ruth, you are not getting younger," Mr. Ezeh said, his tone serious. "And we feel it's high time you settle down."The words sank in like a sharp blade, cutting deeper than Ruth could have anticipated. She had always known this moment might come, but hearing it spoken aloud made it feel so final. She swallowed hard, trying to mask the flood of emotions that threatened to spill out—anger, sadness, confusion. The weight of it all hit her in waves.
But Mr. Ezeh wasn’t done."This is Mark," he said, gesturing toward the man sitting across from Ruth. "He is here to ask for your hand in marriage, and I have given my consent."Ruth’s heart dropped. She stared at Mark, trying to make sense of it all. This man—this stranger—was supposed to be the answer to her life’s biggest question? Was this what her adoptive father had planned for her all along?
Mark’s smile remained, though it seemed uncertain now, as if he too wasn’t entirely sure what to say or how to react. Ruth glanced from him to Mr. Ezeh, her mind racing. This wasn’t what she had envisioned for her life. This wasn’t how she had dreamed of finding love, if she even still believed it was possible. Her gaze flicked to Mrs. Ezeh, who was sitting nearby, watching the scene unfold with a blank expression.
No comfort. No support. Ruth had long since accepted that she wasn’t the daughter they had wanted, but this was the moment it became painfully clear how little her opinion mattered.
"Ruth," Mr. Ezeh continued, as if he hadn’t noticed the conflict brewing inside her, "It’s for your own good. It’s time you stopped living in the past and started thinking about your future."
She could feel the walls closing in, suffocating her with their expectations. Ruth had always been expected to do as they said, but this? This was too much. It was as if she had no choice—her entire future was being handed to her in the form of a stranger’s hand.
"I’m sure Mark would be a good husband," Mr. Ezeh said, his voice dripping with finality. "You should give him a chance. He’s willing to take care of you. He’s a good man."Ruth’s chest tightened. A good man? Did it even matter if he was a good man if she didn’t even know him? If she had never been asked what she wanted for herself, what she needed from life?
She had spent her entire life following the demands of others—doing what they wanted, being who they expected her to be—and now she was expected to marry someone she had never met, someone they had chosen for her, without even a single consideration of her feelings.
She opened her mouth to protest, to speak up, but the words caught in her throat. What would be the point? The weight of their control had always been heavy on her, and now it felt like it had crushed her entirely.
Mark shifted awkwardly in his seat, his smile faltering slightly under Ruth’s gaze. He looked like he was waiting for her to say something—anything—but Ruth couldn’t bring herself to utter a single word. She didn’t know how to express what was boiling inside her without making the situation worse.
It was as if the life she had once dreamed of had slipped further and further away, and all she could do now was watch as the people around her made decisions she would have to live with. But she wasn’t sure she could live with this.Ruth sat in silence, her heart pounding in her chest as the weight of the situation sank deeper. She felt trapped—like a puppet in a play she never auditioned for.
Mark, who had been introduced as her future husband, shifted awkwardly on the couch, his nervous smile not reaching his eyes. Ruth didn’t know how to feel about him; she didn’t even know him. How could she? He was a stranger, thrust upon her without any consideration for her feelings, her desires, or her dreams.
Mr. Ezeh seemed to notice her silence and pressed on. "You’ll have a stable life with Mark," he continued, his voice growing firmer. "You can start a family, build a future together. It’s time to stop being the housekeeper and start living like a real woman. You’re an adult now, Ruth. You can’t keep living in the shadows forever."
