Jessica was only 17 years old when she made the biggest mistake of her life—a mistake that started off as innocent friendship but would later haunt her forever. She had always been a quiet, well-behaved girl.
The type of daughter every Nigerian parent would proudly call “omodan”—a good child raised in a strict but loving home. Her parents ensured she stayed focused on her studies and avoided bad influences. Her father, Mr. Patrick, was a respected businessman, while her mother, Mrs. Helen, was a school teacher who believed strongly in discipline. They provided everything Jessica needed, so she never lacked. Yet they never imagined that danger could come from someone they trusted.
David, the 18-year-old boy who lived a few houses away, had been in Jessica’s life since childhood. Their families were close—always exchanging visits and looking out for one another. Jessica’s parents often spoke highly of David, saying he was well-mannered, respectful, and responsible.
David had just finished secondary school and was awaiting his university admission. He was taller than most boys his age, good-looking and charming. His confidence and sweet words made many girls admire him. But Jessica never saw him that way—at least not at first.
Jessica and David had always been friendly, like siblings. They grew up playing together in the neighborhood, attending the same church, and even sharing family meals on some occasions. Their parents saw no harm in their closeness, believing David would protect Jessica like a big brother. But things changed when David started seeing Jessica as more than just a little sister.
At first, it was subtle. He would compliment her hair, call her beautiful, and find excuses to touch her hand or brush her shoulder. Jessica, young and naive, thought nothing of it. After all, he was family to her.
Then came the gifts—small things like biscuits, chocolates, and sometimes even money.
“Just take it,” he would say with a smile. “You’re special to me.”
Jessica was flattered. No boy had ever given her attention like this before. Soon, David started walking her home from school, talking to her about things her strict parents never discussed—love, relationships, and how she was mature enough to have a boyfriend.
At first, Jessica laughed it off. But David was persistent.
“Jessica, you’re not a baby anymore,” he said one afternoon as they walked home. “I really like you, and I know you like me too.”
Jessica hesitated. Did she like him? Maybe. He was kind to her. He made her feel special. But was that love?
“I don’t know,” she finally said.
David smiled. “Don’t worry. I’ll wait. But just know that I’ll always be here for you.”
That was how it started. David knew exactly what he was doing. He showered Jessica with attention, making her feel like she was the most important person in the world. He told her she was different from other girls, that he saw a future with her.
Slowly, Jessica started to believe him.
Her best friend Lillian noticed the change and warned her.
“Jessica, be careful oh. This David guy—e be like say he get plan,” Lillian said one afternoon after school.
Jessica rolled her eyes. “Plan ke? He’s just nice to me.”
Lillian scoffed. “Nice? My dear, no boy go just dey do all this if he no want something. Don’t be foolish.”
Jessica brushed off the warning. Lillian was always overthinking things. David wasn’t like that—or so she thought.
Meanwhile, David was carefully breaking down all of Jessica’s defenses. One day, as they walked home, he held her hand and asked, “You trust me, right?”
Jessica nodded. “Of course.”
“Then prove it,” he whispered, looking deep into her eyes.
Jessica blushed but didn’t say anything. David knew he was winning.
One afternoon, David made a strange request.
“Let’s go somewhere private after school,” he said.
Jessica frowned. “Private where?”
“Just trust me. There’s nothing bad, I promise. I just want to spend time with you without any disturbance.”
Jessica hesitated. A voice in her head told her it was a bad idea. But then she looked at David’s warm smile and all her worries disappeared.
“Okay,” she agreed.
That was the decision that changed everything.
After school, instead of heading home, Jessica followed David as he led her through a quieter path. At first, it seemed normal—just two teenagers walking and talking. But as they moved further away from the familiar streets, Jessica’s heart began to race.
“David, where are we going?” she asked.
“Relax, we’re almost there,” he said.
The path turned into a small area behind an uncompleted building. It was quiet—too quiet. Jessica suddenly felt uneasy.
“I think we should go back,” she said.
David turned to her, his expression unreadable.
“Don’t you trust me?”
Jessica swallowed. “I do, but—”
“No but. Just follow me a little further,” he insisted.
Against her better judgment, Jessica followed.
Jessica’s heart pounded as she followed David deeper into the secluded path. She kept looking over her shoulder, feeling an unfamiliar sense of unease. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the bushy pathway.
“David, I really think we should turn back,” she said, her voice shaky.
